Jotunheim is the land of the giants, the Jotun. In both the Eddas we learn that the creatures from there, at least some of them, are uncommonly large and strong when Gefjun uses four oxen obtained from Jotunheim to plough out some land, forming an island. The Jotunar are associated, at least in some fashion, with primordial power, as Night is the daughter of Narfi who dwelt in Jotunheim. Angrboda, with whom Loki sires Fenrir, Jormugandr and Hel is described as a giantess of Jotunheim and all of her children were initially raised in Jotunheim, prior to being brought to Asgard.
The Jotun seem to possess strength that the Aesir do not, except perhaps, Thor. When a new wall must be built around Asgard, it is a Jotun, along with his horse, who completes the task, or nearly so, in an exceptionally short time compared to the time Aesir expected the job to take.
In Jotunheim, things seem to again be comprehensible to the human psyche, at least to a degree, but the world seems to be stranger, particularly larger, in many respects to our sensibilities.
